Maroon Theatre Project is excited to announce the launch of the Lorraine Hansberry Youth Playwriting Fellowship, a groundbreaking initiative created specifically for Newark's youth.

This unique program is designed to empower high school students, providing them with a platform to explore sociopolitical issues, collaborate with their peers, and write original plays that delve into topics they are most passionate about. Through the art of theatre, this fellowship aims to equip youth with the tools and skills necessary to address social justice issues, fostering leadership, problem-solving abilities, and an environment that values creativity, self-expression, and artistic development.

This opportunity is open to Newark, NJ youth ages 14-18. Applications are open and close on November 1st at 11:59 p.m. More information is below under our programs. Click the button to apply.

Our Programs

    Program Highlights:

    You will be introduced to and guided by the rich heritage of Black feminist principles and engage with Black feminist theatre by reading and analyzing plays by Black women/femme playwrights to gain a deeper understanding of play and story structure, drawing inspiration for your own work.

    Over the course of the fellowship, you will write an original play. This hands-on experience will give you the opportunity to express yourself and explore the social justice topics that resonate with you.

  • The heart of a thriving community is its people, their voices, and their stories. At our community theatre program in Newark, we believe in the transformative power of theater, where every individual has a stage, a script, and a spotlight to express themselves, provoke thought, and explore pressing sociopolitical issues.

    Our approach is deeply rooted in the techniques of "Theatre of the Oppressed." This groundbreaking theatrical method empowers individuals to become active participants in their own narratives and engage in dialogues that address social injustices. We use theatre as a dynamic and inclusive tool to inspire positive change within our community.

  • Our Monologue Writing & Performance Program is an intensive program that will guide you through the process of crafting a powerful monologue. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, you will learn the art of storytelling, writing, and performance. Your journey will be filled with self-discovery, growth, and collaboration with like-minded individuals who share your passion for the arts.

    At the heart of this program lies the opportunity to write and perform your own original monologue. Your hard work and dedication will be showcased in the final filming of the performance. This powerful culmination will not only be a testament to your artistic growth but also an opportunity to share your story of resistance, resilience, and liberation with a wider audience.

  • Our Youth Arts Mentoring Program pairs aspiring young artists with experienced mentors who are passionate about their craft. Through one-on-one guidance and group workshops, we provide a supportive and nurturing environment for these young minds to explore their artistic potential. Coming 2024.

  • Our Teaching Artists Program equips educators with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate the arts into their curriculum. We believe that arts education is a powerful tool for fostering creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence in students. Coming 2024.
